I was so excited when I learned that FLEX Studios was opening a new Pilates space in Woodbury, NY—their first location on Long Island! I’ve only done Pilates one other time on a reformer, so I was thrilled when I saw on Instagram that their grand opening was this Thursday through Sunday…and I was even happier when I found out that they were offering free trial classes during this time.
For me, one of the highlights of the studio is its location. It is right on my way home from work, so I have no excuse now to skip a workout. I also loved that the space was bright and clean, and with only a handful of reformers, the studio allowed for plenty of individual instruction.
I immediately signed up for their FlexFormer class and tried it out yesterday. I also signed up for FlexIR, which is a Pilates-based class that is held in an infared-heated studio, but I am currently on the waiting list (fingers crossed I get in). I squeezed the 55-minute FlexFormer class into the middle of my workday yesterday and barely made it on time. I had only a few minutes to purchase a pair of grippy socks (which are required for FlexFormer classes).

My instructor, Kara, was great and helped me get set-up on the reformer before going over the basics of how to adjust the machine. The FlexFormer workout merges two Pilates pieces together—the reformer and the Pilates chair. Combined with strength training and high-energy music, this was one serious workout. Within a few minutes, I could feel muscles I didn’t even know I had start to shake. This fast-paced, total body workout is perfect if you are looking to sculpt and tone your muscles, while improving your endurance, stamina, balance, and alignment.
I loved that Kara was very hands-on and fixed my form or came over and explained an exercise when I needed clarification. Since this was only my second class on a reformer, the guidance during the workout was most helpful.

To celebrate the grand opening, Flex Studios had a pop-up with local retailers including Bandier, Aurum Rose Beauty (a local natural beauty shop), and delicious treats from Organic Krush (a local organic eatery and juice bar).
Before heading back to the office for the rest of the afternoon, I grabbed a smoothie from Organic Krush. It was the perfect way to finish off my workout.
