Did anyone else do a double-take when they realized that this weekend is Memorial Day Weekend? For sure I thought my colleague was mistaken when before we hung up our call the other day, she said, “I hope you have a great Memorial Day Weekend!” I thought to myself, “That’s weeks away!” Well, as it turned out, Memorial Day Weekend was right around the corner.
I have no clue where the last couple of months have gone. I know the days have passed, but it’s honestly felt like the last two months were just lost. Usually, this time of year makes me so excited—my beach opens, we have summer Fridays at work, and I look forward to the long, hot days ahead. But this summer is not like that of summer’s past. While the beaches will be open, they’ll be operating at fifty percent capacity, people will be social distancing and wearing masks, and I already noticed a big red ‘X’ marking every other spot in the beach parking lot. Yes, this summer will be a very different kind of summer, for sure.
This pandemic has taught me a lot and put many things in perspective. One huge lesson has been to be grateful for the little things. The last couple of months have made me appreciate just being able to go outside and take a walk. This summer, I’m grateful to live near a beach that will be open. While I doubt I’ll be leisurely laying out for hours as I’ve done in the past, this summer may somehow still spark some new traditions.
So, however different your Memorial Day Weekend looks this year, I hope you stay healthy, safe, and enjoy whatever you’re able to do!
