With everything going on in the world right now, I almost lost track of the dates…and a big milestone. Today marks my seven-year thyroidversary!
I keep telling myself that I’m going to stop writing about my thyroidversary every year, but since my diagnosis has made me so much of the person I’ve become and influenced what I do for a living, I feel that it is important to commemorate the date.
Admittedly, it has been hard to celebrate much these last few months. But I would be remiss if I did not at least spend a little time reflecting on how far I’ve come since those early days of learning I had thyroid cancer. This is the first year where the diagnosis has felt like it happened a lifetime ago, perhaps because it’s been a while since I’ve seen my endocrinologist or gone for blood work due to the pandemic. But then again, that little yellow pill that lives on the end table next to my bed serves as a daily reminder of my past.
I’ve spent the better part of the last year feeling like, “what’s next?” for me and my story. I love sharing it and hope that it inspires other newly diagnosed patients. I’ve been honored to have it included in the book, TOUGH: Women Who Survived Cancer, and am elated that it will live on alongside the stories of 37 other inspiring women. And I’m happy I’ve been able to meet so many other incredible wellness warriors along the way.
While I’d love to have more clarity around my next steps, for now I’m just taking it day by day. I am thrilled that I’ve completed my holistic health coaching certification with the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and that I’m on my way to sit for the Board Certified Patient Advocacy Exam. If cancer has taught me one thing, it’s to embrace the uncertainty that comes with life. I know these next few years will bring lots of opportunities—and lots of changes. And I’m excited for both!
Thank you to those who have continued to follow my story, read my blog, and connect with me on social media. I hope I’ve been able to inspire you, even in a small way.
