If you’ve been following along for a while, you know that November is my favorite month. It’s not because of the beautiful crisp weather or the cozy fall fashion but because it is my birthday month. I’ve always taken birthdays seriously, but even more so after having cancer in my twenties. However, my birthday will look slightly different than in years past, as my caregiving responsibilities will keep me closer to home. This year, I’m also wrestling in my mind a bit with being in my mid-30s. There’s something about passing the age of 35 that feels scary. While I try not to get hung up on numbers (which I never used to do in the past), let’s focus on what’s on my agenda this month.
Do: I’m so excited to have officially launched In Steil Comms, my boutique communications agency, earlier this month. Last week, I did a fun photo shoot for my new website, which I’m still working on putting the finishing touches on. Now that the website is mainly up and I have announced the agency, I have room on my roster for 1-2 more mission-driven clients. If you or someone you know needs public relations, social media, or advocacy communications help, reach out!
Visit: Initially, I was going to take a trip to the Catskills for my birthday this year, but after my grandmother’s condition further declined in recent weeks, I thought it best to stay closer to home. So I decided to plan a visit to the SoJo Spa Club in New Jersey, an easy day trip from Long Island. I’ve seen this serene place make the rounds on Instagram and I have always wanted to treat myself to one of their many spa services that range from saunas and therapy rooms to volcanic sand baths.
Go: If you haven’t already, remember to make your voice heard and get out to vote! I voted early, and despite checking the website in advance, I somehow missed that my polling place opened at Noon the day I went. I drove back a couple of hours later to cast my ballot and was thrilled to be able to vote and cross that task off my to-do list. I learned so much in my Patients Rising Advocacy Masterclass about the importance of legislative advocacy, as well as about upcoming legislation that impacts seniors and caregivers, two issues I care deeply about. Whatever issues are important to you, learn how the candidates on the ballot feel about them and know before you vote how they could potentially impact those causes you care about.
Try: Last week, I went to my first in-studio workout since the pandemic and realized how much better I feel when I work out regularly. After getting over being sore for a day or two, the infrared Flex IR class, a mat-based Pilates class in a heated room, inspired me to commit to working out more, especially now that I work from home and have total control over my schedule. I forgot how excited I used to get to start my day with a workout and how much more productive I felt after class. Now that the weather is cooling down and it’s not light out as long in the evenings, returning to boutique workout classes feels like the best way to stay in shape.
