Yesterday, I made an impromptu trip to Montauk for a workout class at Gurney’s. It’s not that I had nothing better to do over the weekend (actually, quite the contrary). But I felt like I needed to take some time for myself and practice self-care. Last week was unbelievably difficult and emotionally draining as I commemorated the second anniversary of when my grandmother first went to the hospital and later ended up in long-term care. While managing client work helped take my mind off of my grief, my anxiety was at an all-time high, and my sleep was non-existent.

There’s something about the East End of Long Island that transforms me. It’s more peaceful than the rest of the Island, there’s a slower pace of life that happens out there, and this time of year, it’s relatively quiet (minus the pumpkin pickers and vineyard-goers who head out for day trips). Each time I return from the East End, I feel like a new person. It could be for just a few hours or overnight, but the feeling internally is the same.

Sadly, I didn’t have all the time in the world yesterday, but I had enough time to wander around Gurney’s, take a workout class on one of the decks overlooking the ocean, and then head down to the beach for a sanity stroll. Even the short trip, complete with a stop at my beloved Hampton Coffee, made me happy and put me in a better headspace.
I shared this Instagram Reel about the importance of self-care, and it reminded me how grateful I am for my routine. Despite life’s highs and lows, having a wellness routine you can return to makes everything easier. Whether it’s taking a beach walk or joining a workout class, your wellness rituals matter and can help you during stressful times.
What are some things you do to practice self-care?
