There is always a lot to do before going on a trip. There’s the packing, the errands to run for last-minute odds and ends, the finding of the passport, and the list goes on. But when you’re going out of town for a slightly extended stay, and a fancy event is involved, there’s even more to think about (and to pack). My trip is now t-minus two days away, and something that was on my to-do list before I departed was to get a haircut. Fortunately, I knew where to go and had the perfect person for the job!
Jane at Gizay Michaels Salon in Huntington has been cutting my hair for a while now. Fun fact: I started going to Gizay in high school, and am so glad I found my way back to this salon. It was one of my clients who recommended them to me after I commented on how perfect her hair always looks. We tend to like the same places, so I laughed when she told me where she got her hair cut, and then I shared that I used to go there for many years before I went to college in Washington, DC. After that conversation, I immediately called the salon and booked an appointment with Jane.
To be honest, I do little with my hair in terms of haircuts. For many years, I never knew what style I was looking for and often left the decision up to my stylist (which has its risks). After I had thyroid cancer, I got ambitious and chopped off about 10 inches to donate to Locks of Love. Another time, I tried balayage (remember when that was popular?) and vowed never to put any color on my hair again. Then, there was the unfortunate layering incident, which made my hair look so thin for so long. Now, in my late thirties, I’ve figured out what looks best, and I stick to getting a trim in the fall and spring, keeping my hair long enough so I can put it back when I need to, and making sure that layers never happen again to my hair (#IYKYK).
After I met Jane and told her my “hairstory,” it was like she knew what type of cut I needed. Aside from flat ironing my hair (which I’ve cut back on doing), my hair is fairly healthy. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve embraced more of my hair’s natural wavy pattern, and now appreciate that I can wear it both ways with minimal effort. So, my goal when I get trims is to keep my hair looking healthy by removing the dead ends.
When I went for my last cut at Gizay in November, I instantly remembered what I enjoyed about the salon. First, it’s local, which makes it convenient to get to in the middle of my day. The staff is friendly and accommodating, and I can get an appointment that works with my schedule. Next up, it has a relaxed vibe. Ever go to a salon where people are running all over the place, and clients are in and out? I don’t know about you, but I don’t find that to be an enjoyable experience, and at the end of the day, going for a haircut should feel like getting pampered. And, finally, having one person consistently doing my hair has been a game-changer. It makes life so much easier since Jane knows my style and hair. Plus, when you support a local business, everyone feels like family, and it’s nice to be able to catch up.
I guess you could say that my shoulder-length cut with angles to frame my face is my go-to look. But I firmly believe there’s nothing better than having an easy cut to style and a great stylist and salon to go to.
