When the end of August rolls around, there’s a bittersweet feeling in the air. The annual Hampton Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton, NY kicks off, but it also means that the close of summer as we know it is officially upon us. In the next week, summer vacations will have been taken, kids will be back in school, and life will go into fall mode.
But until that happens, I’ll be enjoying my yearly tradition of attending The Classic, as most equestrians affectionately call the horse show, and trying not to think about the conclusion of my favorite season. This year, the show jumping competition runs from Sunday, August 25 to Sunday, September 1. While this weekend officially kicks off “Opening Day,” there are plenty of activities happening all week long. From a dog and cat adoption day on Monday, August 26, to leadline classes for the littlest equestrians and the fan-favorite Longines class in the Grand Prix ring on Sunday, September 1, there is something for everyone to take in. Plus, there’s tons of food and shopping to be had in between the riding and spectating.
This year, I’m planning to be at the showgrounds later in the week, so if you’re heading out that way, say hello. And I’m bringing an old barn friend with me, so we can catch up as we watch the show and reminisce about our riding days together. I’m looking forward to stopping in at the Equisite Elements of Style booth to see the founder, Brianne, and take a look at some of her new riding apparel for fall, and then visiting the La Enovesé Designs booth, as the founder and designer, Kaela, has a bracelet that I’ve been eyeing. Aside from that, I always enjoy perusing the vendor tents and finding new brands in the equestrian space to support.
Whether you’re a serious equestrian or a spectator, the Hampton Classic is one of the best events to attend. For me, I love walking around and watching riders warm up their horses before their classes and I appreciate those small moments that happen between riders and their trainers throughout the day. The Classic brings back so many fond memories, even though it’s been decades since I’ve been a competitor at a horse show. But when I’m there, it’s like no time has passed at all.
