Well, I was supposed to be in the Cayman Islands this weekend, continuing the birthday celebrations, but Hurricane Sara had other plans. Since paid time off is such an important topic, I decided to publish the scheduled post.
Did you know that a Pew Research Center study found that 46% of Americans do not take all of their paid time off? Taking time off is crucial, whether it is for a sick day, to care for a child or elderly relative, or to go on vacation and recharge away from work. Yet, according to the Brookings Institution, the United States is the only advanced country in the world without a federal paid leave policy.
As an entrepreneur, I don’t have access to an employer-sponsored paid leave policy that would allow me days off. However, I strongly believe in the importance of taking time off to protect my mental health and care for my physical and emotional well-being. So, while I won’t be enjoying a little getaway in the Cayman Islands, I will still be unplugging from work for a few days to focus on self-care.
P.S. If you have access to paid time off through your employer, be sure to use it before you lose it—and don’t feel guilty about taking it. You’ve earned that time!
