It’s been years since I sat in a doctor’s office and heard the words that changed everything: “You have cancer.” I don’t consciously replay that moment often, but the impact of that day lingers in my life—woven into my routine, my mindset, and even my career path.
Twelve years later, I’m grateful that my health is good. I’ve found an incredible endocrinologist who understands my journey, and while my once-visible scar has faded, some things haven’t changed. I still get scanxiety before my annual checkups and I remain on my synthetic thyroid hormone replacement pill every morning, an essential part of my routine that keeps me going.
And yet, despite the fear and uncertainty that once consumed me, I can say this with confidence: I wouldn’t be who I am today without my thyroid cancer diagnosis.
Before cancer, I was in my twenties, drifting through jobs in higher education, searching for fulfillment but never quite finding it. Deep down, I knew I wanted something more—I just wasn’t sure what more looked like. Entrepreneurship felt like a distant dream, one I wasn’t yet bold enough to chase.
Then, cancer changed my perspective. It forced me to reassess everything—what I wanted, how I spent my time, and where I saw my future. And the answer became clear: advocacy.
That single word has shaped my journey ever since, guiding me toward work that feels meaningful, whether it’s sharing my story, helping others navigate their own diagnoses, or amplifying the voices of survivors and caregivers.
Twelve years later, I don’t just live with the impact of that diagnosis—I own it. And for that, I am grateful.
