There seems to be a theme happening this week—one that revolves around change and new beginnings.
Over the weekend, the horse I had been riding moved to a new barn. I knew this transition was coming, but when it finally happened, I felt an unexpected sense of sadness and loss. I started this week by arriving at the new barn, which is beautiful—but to me, it felt like stepping into a completely foreign world. I didn’t know the layout, where anything was kept, or even the rhythm of the place. Everything just felt…unfamiliar.
It’s not a feeling I experience often, but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to sit with that discomfort instead of resisting it.
Adding to the theme of newness, today also marks the start of a different adventure: the first boat race of the season with my sailing crew. Another environment, another shift, another chance to find my footing in unfamiliar territory.
The funny thing is, by the end of the week, all of this will start to feel normal. What began as new will soon become routine.
And that’s the beauty of change, isn’t it? It often arrives cloaked in discomfort—feeling uncertain, awkward, and maybe even a little overwhelming. But if there’s one thing life (and horses…and sailing!) has taught me, it’s that the unfamiliar doesn’t stay that way forever. We adapt. We grow. We find our way.
By next week, I’ll know exactly where the grooming brushes are kept at the new barn, which paddock gets the best afternoon sun, and how to move confidently through the aisles. I’ll be back in sync with my sailing crew, the water beneath us no longer feeling quite so new.
So, if you find yourself navigating a season of change—whether it’s a new job, a move, or even a subtle shift in your day-to-day—take heart. The awkwardness fades. The strangeness softens. And before long, what once felt foreign becomes part of your rhythm.
Here’s to welcoming the new—even when it challenges us. Because sometimes, growth comes from exactly the moments that unsettle us.
Have you experienced a recent change that felt uncomfortable at first but turned out to be just what you needed? I’d love to hear your story.
