One of my favorite things to do when I was younger was to go to horse shows as a spectator. I still love it just as much now, but life—and time—often gets in the way. This past weekend, though, the stars aligned. I had a little downtime, the weather was perfection, and I decided to head to the barn to cheer on my barn mates.
Since I’m still relatively new to this barn, it felt like the perfect opportunity to get to know more people and catch up with familiar faces. After riding at a small, private backyard barn for the last few years, I had almost forgotten the excitement and energy that comes with the hustle and bustle of a show day.
When I arrived mid-day, the lot was already packed with cars and trailers. Paddocks had been turned into makeshift lunging rings, and horses, ponies, and vendors filled every available space. The air buzzed with anticipation and camaraderie. It was electrifying—and instantly transported me back to my childhood, when arriving at the showgrounds felt like stepping into another world filled with possibility.

Since I got there later in the day, I made my way to the ring where the ponies were already competing. I was never a pony kid myself, but watching these tiny equines pack their equally tiny riders around the course was pure joy. There’s something so heartwarming about seeing those early partnerships form and flourish in the show ring.

Spending the afternoon at the show reminded me why I love this sport—and this community—so much. It was a welcome break from my usual riding routine and a beautiful way to connect with the horse world. Sometimes, the best days are the ones where you can just be present, cheer others on, and soak it all in.
