We all love a good plan. There’s comfort in knowing what’s next, and confidence in believing we’ve got it all figured out. But life? Life has a funny way of reminding us who’s really in control.
Recently, I found myself facing one of those moments—when everything I had carefully mapped out took an unexpected turn. At first, I felt frustrated, maybe even a little defeated. But with time (and perspective), I realized that the detour I hadn’t asked for might have been exactly the path I needed. This is a reflection on finding grace in the chaos—and how to move forward when life doesn’t go according to plan.
Here’s what happened…
The other day, I trekked into New York City for an appointment that had taken me months to secure. I was excited and nervous in equal measure—but mostly relieved that the big day had finally arrived. It marked the end of weeks of preparation…or so I thought.

I triple-checked my bag before leaving, making sure I had everything I needed. I left home earlier than usual to allow extra time for a delayed train or wrong turn. I rehearsed what I would say in my head the whole ride in. Everything was accounted for.

By some small miracle, the travel gods were on my side, and I arrived early enough to sit at a quiet café, sip an iced cappuccino, and enjoy a moment of calm before go-time.
But the calm didn’t last.
As I headed to the address listed on my confirmation email, I realized I couldn’t find the building. I walked up and down the block, scanning doorways and signage. No one I asked seemed to know what I was looking for. My early arrival time? Quickly slipping away.
Eventually, I located the entrance—hidden in plain sight, of course—and made it through security and up to the third floor just in time. But that’s when the day took a turn I couldn’t have anticipated.
After months of preparation, weeks of stress, and countless sleepless nights, I was told—within minutes—that the appointment would need to be rescheduled. Just like that.
I stood there stunned. I had done everything right. I followed the plan. I prepared, I showed up, I was ready.
So now what?
In that moment, I had two options: I could react in frustration and anger—or I could accept the outcome with grace. I chose the latter. Not because I wasn’t disappointed. I was. But because I had made peace with the possibility that things might not go as planned. And sometimes, that’s the only thing we can control—how we respond.

On the walk back to Grand Central Station, still feeling a little defeated, I made a conscious decision: to slow down. To take in the brownstones I usually rush past. To feel grateful for the sun on my face. To remind myself that this wasn’t time wasted—it was a dry run. A test of my patience, resilience, and ability to regroup.
Next time, I’ll show up just as prepared. But I’ll also show up with the quiet confidence of someone who knows that even when things fall apart, they don’t have to take you with them.
Sometimes the detour isn’t a failure—it’s just a reminder to trust the journey.
