There’s something about being on the water in the summer that makes time slow down. The sun, the salty breeze, the sound of the sail catching the wind—it all feels like a pause from the pace of everyday life.
But this summer, sailing has been more than a break. It’s been a classroom.
I’m still relatively new to sailing. Each time I step on a boat, I’m reminded of how much there is to learn: the way the wind shifts, how to trim the sails just right, the importance of timing, trust, and teamwork. It’s humbling. It requires patience. And it’s taught me a lot about the parallels between being out on the water and running a business.
Much like sailing, entrepreneurship is all about navigating the unknown. You may chart a course, but the weather (or in business, the market) might have other plans. You have to adjust, sometimes on the fly. You have to stay calm, ask for help, and lean on your “crew.” Most importantly, you have to keep going—especially when things don’t look smooth ahead.
This summer has brought some beautiful sailing days—and a few surprises I didn’t anticipate. But what’s stayed with me most is the reminder that we’re always learning. Whether it’s mastering a tack or figuring out the next move in my business, the lesson is the same: stay curious, stay resilient, and trust that you’ll find your rhythm.
