{Sailing Awards Dinner #OOTN}
If you told me at the start of the year that I’d be ending the season with two sailing awards, I never would have believed you. Yet here I am, fresh off my first season on the water—with a second-place finish in the Spring Series and a first-place finish in the Summer Series—and a heart full of gratitude for the unexpected joy this new adventure has brought.
This past weekend, I attended the sailing awards ceremony, an event that marked the end of an unforgettable first season of racing for me. When I joined the sailing community last year, I had no idea how much joy, camaraderie, and adventure it would bring into my life. What started as a curiosity quickly became a passion, and somewhere between learning the ropes and trimming the sails, I found a new community that felt like home.
Each sail brought new lessons—about teamwork, patience, and reading the wind—but it also reminded me of the simple joy that comes from trying something new and giving yourself permission to be a beginner again.
For most of my life, I’ve gravitated toward individual sports, or sports like horseback riding, where success depends on a deep connection with a nonverbal partner. Whether it’s feeling the rhythm of a horse beneath you or anticipating its next move, there’s a quiet communication that’s always drawn me in. Sailing, in its own way, feels similar. You have to listen—to the wind, the water, and your crew—and find that same unspoken rhythm. It’s a dance of balance, intuition, and trust.
What’s made sailing so special for me isn’t just the competition—it’s the people. The laughter shared between races, the encouragement from more experienced sailors, and the sense of belonging that comes from working together toward a common goal have all made this experience richer than I ever expected. Standing at the awards dinner surrounded by my crewmates and fellow sailors, I couldn’t help but feel immense gratitude for how far I’ve come, for what I’ve learned, and for the friendships that have formed along the way.
As I look ahead to next season, I’m excited to keep learning, growing, and sailing—both on and off the water. This first racing season reminded me that the best adventures often come when we step outside our comfort zones and say “yes” to something new.
Here’s to many more sunsets at sea, friendly races, and the ever-changing winds that keep life interesting.
