In t-minus 48 hours, I’ll be making another trip around the sun. And while my feelings around the whole birthday countdown thing have shifted a bit this year (more on that in Friday’s post), one thing has remained the same—the joy in doing something I love.
This year, the best birthday present feels like spending time at the barn. So, when the owner I ride for asked if I wanted to spend a few days in the saddle, I jumped at the chance (pun intended). Sure, I might be incredibly busy this week getting ready for an international trip and trying to wrap up client work, but I never pass up the opportunity to spend time at the barn, where life slows down and perspective comes naturally.
Being back in the saddle always reminds me of why I fell in love with horses in the first place. There’s a quiet language between rider and horse, a trust that builds slowly and requires presence, patience, and attention. It’s a relationship that doesn’t rely on words but speaks volumes about connection, timing, and mutual respect. After weeks or months away, returning feels like reconnecting with an old friend—and that feeling of being “home” is priceless.
Riding isn’t just about the lessons in the saddle; it’s about how those lessons ripple into the rest of life. It’s a reminder to slow down, to listen, and to trust the process—even when things are busy, messy, or uncertain. Spending time at the barn is my way of gifting myself a moment of calm and clarity in the middle of a hectic week, a way to anchor myself before stepping into a new year of life.
As my birthday approaches, I’m grateful for these quiet gifts—moments that make me feel fully present, alive, and connected to the things I love. Sometimes the best presents aren’t wrapped in paper; they’re experiences that remind you who you are, what grounds you, and what truly brings you joy.
