If there’s one thing travel loves to test, it’s your patience. And after a beautiful trip that filled my camera roll and my heart, I thought the journey home would be the easy part. Instead, I was treated to an unexpected 24-hour delay that forced me to slow down, breathe, and lean into a lesson I didn’t know I needed.
In the past, a delay like that in a foreign country would have set off a full-blown panic attack. Being stuck somewhere unfamiliar, with no clear timeline and plans unraveling, would have been overwhelming. But this time, while it was inconvenient, it registered more as an annoyance than the end of the world. That shift alone showed me just how much work I’ve done on myself and how much steadier I’ve become, even when life throws a wrench in my itinerary.
Delays are never convenient. They reroute your plans, disrupt your sleep, and take you out of the rhythm you had hoped to return to. But somewhere between the terminal announcements, rebooked flights, and night in a hotel, I found myself noticing a shift. Instead of becoming frustrated, I surrendered to the moment. I reminded myself that I had just spent days wandering Christmas markets, strolling cobblestone streets, and soaking in a new environment—things I once longed for. Maybe this delay wasn’t a setback, but a final invitation to practice the patience I’ve been trying to cultivate.
This year has been all about growth for me—personally, professionally, and emotionally. Building a business, navigating change, traveling solo, grieving, celebrating, and constantly redefining what balance looks like…it’s a lot. And yet, even in the middle of an airport with tired travelers all around me, I felt grounded. I realized how far I’ve come in learning to trust timing, even when it looks nothing like what I expected.
In that extra 24 hours, I gave myself permission to slow down and to reflect on the highlights of my trip, to catch up on writing, and to appreciate the privilege of traveling in the first place. Maybe patience is less about waiting quietly and more about choosing how we show up when life takes a detour.
As I finally touched down back home, tired but grateful, I carried with me a reminder: growth often happens in the unexpected pauses. Sometimes the journey back is just as meaningful as the trip itself.
