March is National Sleep Awareness Month, and it’s been reminding me of something we don’t talk about enough: how you end your day matters just as much as how you start it.
For the longest time, my nighttime routine was…nonexistent. Late-night scrolling, answering “just one more email,” and going to bed feeling wired instead of relaxed. Sound familiar?
Lately, I’ve been focusing on small, intentional shifts—and they’ve made all the difference. If you’re looking to reset your evenings, here are a few simple ways to improve your nighttime routine and set yourself up for better sleep.
1. Set a “soft close” to your day: Instead of going from 100 to 0, give yourself time to wind down. Even 20–30 minutes of unplugging from work or social media can help signal to your body that it’s time to rest.
2. Create a go-to wind-down ritual: Think of this as your nightly cue. Whether it’s reading a few pages of a book, journaling, or doing a quick skincare routine, consistency is what makes it stick.
3. Dim the lights (literally): Lighting plays a bigger role than we think. Lowering the lights in the evening creates a calm environment and helps your body ease into sleep mode naturally.
4. Be mindful of what you consume: Late-day caffeine, heavy meals, and even alcohol can disrupt your sleep. Try to keep evenings lighter and more balanced—you’ll feel the difference.
5. Tidy your space: A calm space creates a calm mind. Even a quick tidy-up can transform your bedroom into a more peaceful, sleep-ready retreat.
6. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule: This one’s not always easy (and I’m still working on it myself), but it’s powerful. Going to bed and waking up around the same time each day helps regulate your internal clock and improves sleep quality over time.
7. Give yourself grace: Not every night will be perfect—and that’s okay. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s progress. Even implementing one or two of these habits can make a noticeable difference.
Which of these are you adding into your nighttime routine? Let me know in the comments!
