There’s something humbling about going back to a workout class you know you love…and realizing your body remembers it a little differently than your mind does.
After some time away from the mat — travel, schedule shifts, life doing what it does — I finally made my way back to one of my favorite rituals: infrared mat Pilates. And within minutes of stepping into that warm, softly lit room, it felt like both a reunion and a reset.
The heat hits you first. Not aggressively, but like a slow exhale. The kind that makes your shoulders drop without you realizing you’ve been carrying tension there. Infrared heat is different. It’s not just about sweating (though, yes, you will sweat). It’s deeper, almost therapeutic, warming your muscles from the inside out and making movement feel more fluid and more intentional.
But let’s be honest: returning after time away is…an experience.
There’s always that moment in the beginning where you think, I’ve got this. Muscle memory kicks in, you settle into the rhythm, and for a brief window, you feel exactly like the version of yourself who never left. And then, somewhere between a slow burn core series and a hold that lasts just a few seconds too long, you’re reminded…
Oh. Right.
This is hard.
And yet, that’s part of the magic.
Because instead of frustration, what I felt most was appreciation. For my body showing up, the strength that’s still there (even if it needs a little coaxing), and for the reminder that consistency isn’t about perfection, it’s about returning.
Infrared mat Pilates has always been more than just a workout for me. It’s a full-body reset. The kind that leaves you feeling longer, lighter, and somehow clearer mentally. There’s a meditative quality to it with the combination of heat, breath, and controlled movement that forces you to stay present. You can’t rush through it. You just have to be in it.
And maybe that’s why coming back felt so grounding.
We spend so much time moving forward that we forget the power of returning to the things that make us feel like ourselves. Not in a nostalgic way, but in a reconnecting way.
By the end of class, lying on the mat during the final stretch, I had that familiar post-Pilates feeling: equal parts exhausted and energized. The kind where your muscles are shaking but your mind is completely still.
Will I need a few days to fully recover? Absolutely. And, if you don’t believe me, check out this Reel.
Will that stop me from going back? Not a chance.
Because sometimes, the best thing you can do for yourself isn’t finding something new…it’s coming back to what already works.
