Apparently, some birthday gifts just need a little time to find their moment.
My birthday was back in November, but a friend gifted me a day at Bathhouse Williamsburg as a belated celebration. After rescheduling it more times than I can count, we finally found a day that worked, and somehow, it landed on National Relaxation Day.
Given the few weeks I’d just had, the timing felt almost too perfect.
I had recently returned from international travel and was coming off a particularly tough stretch of disrupted sleep, long days and a lot happening at once. I was tired, and not just the kind of tired that a good night’s sleep fixes. I needed to slow down.

So a day at Bathhouse turned out to be the perfect remedy.
Bathhouse Williamsburg features thermal pools, saunas, a steam room, cold plunges and a rooftop pool overlooking the Manhattan skyline.
We spent the afternoon moving between the pool and heated experiences, catching up and enjoying the luxury of having nowhere else to be. No itinerary. No rushing. Just a few hours to relax.

The rooftop was a highlight. Sitting in the pool with the Manhattan skyline in the distance felt like a little escape without actually leaving the city. And after just returning from an international trip, I appreciated the irony of getting another getaway without needing a passport.
More than anything, I took advantage of the opportunity to simply stop. I’ve always been someone who has a hard time slowing down, and there’s usually something competing for my attention. But that afternoon, there was nothing I needed to accomplish.

Looking back, I think all those postponements made the day even more meaningful. Had we gone months earlier, it would have been a fun birthday celebration, but after everything I’d been through in the weeks leading up to it, the afternoon became something more — a much-needed chance to slow down, reconnect and simply be present.
Sometimes the plans that take the longest to happen really do happen when they’re supposed to. And this one was definitely worth the wait.
