About Living in Steil
Living in Steil (pronounced “style”) is a lifestyle blog that displays the fabulous finds of a busy working professional. It was started in February 2014 and tells a personal story of surviving thyroid cancer, growing from the ordeal, and learning to live in the moment– all while encouraging others to try new things, have fun, and take every day in style!
You can be sure to find weekly posts about beauty products, healthy recipes, restaurant recommendations, travel, Long Island events and more!
About the Editor – Vanessa Steil
Hi! I’m Vanessa, the founder and author of Living in Steil. I reside on Long Island, about an hour away from New York City. Unless stated otherwise, all the photography on this blog is my own, and quite often my living room and kitchen double as my staging grounds. Although I love my Nikon, I never leave home without my IPhone and am constantly amazed by the images I have captured with it.
In 2009, I graduated from The American University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in Political Science and returned to my native Long Island where I embarked on a career in higher education. In April 2013, I suffered a personal set-back when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of 26 (to read the full story about my diagnosis, click here). As a result, I became more invested in my own well-being and took an active interest in health and nutrition. I hope my journey can inspire others, regardless of their age, to be proactive with their health, courageous with their battles, and victorious in their survival.
While most of my days are spent at my 9-5, in my spare time I can be found exploring the scenic beaches on the North Shore, attending a yoga class, hiking, traveling, or enjoying a leisurely brunch. One of my favorite aspects about life on Long Island is the ability to head to the East End for a day trip to the Hamptons, go for a wine tasting at one of the many vineyards, or just explore the North and South Forks and stop at farm stands along the way. And when I need some retail therapy, you can be sure I am browsing Anthropologie, LOFT, H&M, Banana Republic and Bloomingdales.
