Spring Stripes

H&M Striped Dress

The one item that I overlooked when packing for Washington, D.C. was a simple t-shirt dress for the warm (read: hot) weather that was forecast. I thought I could rough it, but my white jeans, tank top, and Sperry’s were no match for a humid D.C. day.

So, what’s a girl to do when on the go and in need of an outfit? Buy it in Georgetown, of course.

While mentally scanning my wardrobe and going from store-to-store, I realized that I am light in the stripe department. Sure, I may have one or two pieces for spring and summer, but nothing that resembled an effortless t-shirt dress.

With those criteria in mind—and not wanting to break the bank—I knew I was in the right place when I walked through the door at H&M. Soon I spotted a rack full of casual t-shirt dresses—for $12.95, no less! With a price tag like that, it was a no-brainer.

As I strolled out of the store, I couldn’t wait to ditch the pants and throw the dress on—which is just what I did the next time I ventured out on another hot D.C. day.

Five Fashionable Finds

Five Fashionable Finds

{Peplum||Dress||Chambray||Off-the-Shoulder||Striped Top}

What do peplums, a tie-front dress, chambray, an off-the-shoulder top, and stripes have in common? They should all be in your closet for spring. Don’t believe me? Just look at retailers like Old Navy, Banana Republic, and H&M this season. You’ll be seeing lots of these pieces. To be sure you’re stepping into spring in style, I’ve rounded up the best looks.

I can’t say enough good things about this chambray shirt from Mossimo at Target. What’s more, seeing the light and dark wash version side-by-side will have you buying two.

We all know that stripes are versatile, so I had to include not one but two pieces in the pattern. A simple striped top works alone or under a blazer for those chilly days (and we’ve been having a lot of them on the East Coast). With any luck warmer days should lie ahead, and this tie-front dress would be the perfect option for brunching or shopping. Of course, the pièce-de-résistance for me is a peplum. Something about that little detail on the bottom has me hooked. I could never own too many peplums (although my closet might disagree). And this darling black-and-white peplum has my name all over it!

Which pieces are you coveting for spring?

What’s in My Bag for a Short Getaway

What's in my Bag

{Jeans//Boots//Blazer (similar here)//Flats (similar here)//Tunic}

I love quick getaways. And this week I’ll be spending time in good old Philadelphia. Don’t worry, there will be plenty of content on the blog this week, and you can follow my journey on Snapchat (username: livinginsteil), and on Instagram. If you have any coffee shops (you know how much I appreciate a good cup of joe) or restaurants I need to try, please leave them in the comments below.

I like to pack light when I travel. My rule of thumb when it comes to luggage is if I can’t comfortably carry it, it won’t be coming with me. There is no worse feeling than having to schlep heavy bags along on your trip — and battle sore muscles as a result. This is even truer when I’m going on a getaway totaling fewer than five days.

Here’s what made the cut for my trip to Philadelphia (following my self-imposed one bag limit):

LOFT skinny jeans: All of the jeans in my closet are from LOFT. I love how they fit, and the best part is that I don’t need to shorten them. I own many pairs in different colors and washes, and they look just as good now as they did when I first bought them. They’re easy to pair with flats or riding boots, and dress-up nicely.

Riding boots: My Franco Sarto riding boots were probably one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. Whether I’m running to a kickboxing class (yes, I wear them with my leggings until I get to the studio), or walking around New York City, these boots are an easy choice. They’re comfortable to walk in all day, and the gold accent pieces add just the right touch. And even though it’s officially spring, this weather has been so unpredictable that boots may be a necessity during this trip.

Blazer: There may be snow in New York, but I’m hoping to catch some warmer weather in Philadelphia and ditch the winter coat. My navy H&M blazer will be perfect for those days in the 60’s that are supposedly on the horizon.

Flats: Just in case the weather turns out to be too warm for boots, my Adrienne Vittadini flats don’t take up much space and can add just the right amount of bling to any look.

Tunic: I own one, and only one tunic. But after shopping at Target recently and spotting this beauty from Merona, I may be a convert. It’s so cozy, and the perfect piece to wear with leggings — or while stuck in a car for three hours.

Basic layering pieces: Since it’s still sweater weather–at least it was when I left New York–I packed along a few long-sleeves that would work under a blazer, and with a light coat. I opted to leave the dark hues at home, and broke out my baby blues and blushes to welcome the start of spring.

A (Brief) Taste of Spring

Outfit of the Day

Outfit of the Day

The recent spring-like temps this weekend were just the tease I needed to start the countdown to the new season (less than 20 days to go!), and break out some of my lighter looks. I was happy to swap my long winter coat and riding boots for my favorite leopard Adrienne Vittadini flats (similar here, here, and here) and a navy blazer from H&M (similar here)…even if it was only a temporary hiatus from the cold (did someone say snow showers on Friday?).

Snaps, Suburbs, and Spring

The slower pace of life this week back in the suburbs has definitely thrown me off. Did anyone else feel like it was Friday on about Wednesday? The dark, dreary, and rainy weather we had for two days this week didn’t help matters. I am eagerly counting down the days until spring, and was thrilled when I saw that it hit 50 degrees yesterday.

Here’s a recap of the week:

The Ultimate Vegas Outfit

It has been a long time since I’ve been to Las Vegas. But when I was tasked with creating the #UltimateVegasOutfit by Vegas.com, images of bright lights, glitz, and glamour came flooding back to me.

I can vividly remember the excitement of the Las Vegas Strip, the endless shows, and a plethora of fancy dining establishments. So when going through my closet, I tried to create outfits that would echo the sentiments of Las Vegas. Whether you will be shopping on The Strip, stopping in Jean Philippe Pâtisserie at Bellagio (a must for every choc-o-holic), or grabbing dinner at Giada at The Cromwell, these looks will keep you stylish for whatever the day brings.

Look #1: Brunch
For my first outfit of the day I chose a pair of white Mossimo jeans and wore them with a BCBG Max Azria black and white striped cut-out top. This is a comfy and chic outfit to wear for brunch at Lavo or coffee at Espressamente Illy (both at Palazzo).

Look #2: Shopping on The Strip
After brunch, change into these Free Press leather leggings from the Nordstrom Rack and pair them with a camo top from Mossimo for shopping at Le Boulevard at Paris, Via Bellagio, or The Shops at the Cosmopolitan Las Vegas. This look can easily take you from day to night with its edgy style.

Look #3: Dinner & Nightlife
If your evening includes dinner at Nobu in Caesars Palace or time at Hyde Bellagio, you may want to slip into something more appropriate. In the spirit of Las Vegas, I grabbed my metallic dress from H&M and sparkly sandals with a low heel for a night on the town.

Bring on the Burgundy

Bring on the Burgundy

One thing about being at home with a cold is that it has left me with little energy to do anything but look at my iPad…which equates to lots of perusing of blogs and online shopping! So far, I’ve been loving all of the burgundy tones from boots to bags, and I am looking forward to adding a few new pieces of this season’s “it” color to my wardrobe.

What trends are on your radar this season?

Over-the-Knee Boots: Splurge or Save

Over-the-Knee Boots: Splurge or Save

Now that it is starting to feel like fall, I have been obsessing over finding the perfect pair of over-the-knee boots. Obviously, I’ve been swooning over the ones from Stuart Weitzman that I have seen all over Instagram. But I’m having a hard time pulling the trigger on a purchase that could equate to rent for a small studio apartment. Anyone else feelin’ me?

So I’ve been scouring the internet for other, slightly cheaper, alternatives that stay true to the classic OTK style. I’ve found a few lovely contenders at DSW and ASOS, but since I am petite and have never rocked the OTK look before, I’m hesitant to order online. Stay tuned as my search continues!

Have you seen any over-the-knee boots that you just had to have?

What’s Your Beauty Sleep Style?

For those of you who know me personally, you are aware how precious my sleep is to me. So when sleep company Casper wanted to know more about beauty sleep style, it was a natural fit. Not only do I value my sleep, but I also enjoy being comfortable and fashionable while getting some shut-eye.

What is Casper, you ask? They are a mattress company — but not just any mattress company. Casper mattresses are made in the USA and boast an impressive design that allows for complete support of your entire body. They remain firm without that dreaded sinking sensation you get with other mattresses. Through a partnership of latex and memory foam, the sleeper gets the best of both worlds: a mattress that keeps you cool (thanks, latex!) and the support of memory foam that contours to your body and leaves you feeling as though you are sleeping on a cloud. And if testing it in their New York City or Los Angeles showrooms doesn’t have you fully convinced, Casper offers a 100-night, no-hassle return policy and a 10-year warranty. So there is no reason to lose any sleep over this purchase. Check out their Twitter page for ways to make sleep great again!

What's Your Beauty Sleep Style?

Now that we have a comfy mattress to sleep on, let’s discuss how to sleep in style. I love sleeping in a good old tee shirt (preferably one with some sass to it like those featured above) and a nice pair of shorts. And while that might work for some year-round, I like to rotate my sleepwear.

In the winter I’m all about cozy and warm, so the skull pajamas I purchased at the Nordstrom Rack last year will be making another appearance once the temperature drops.

For those hot and sticky summer months, lightweight and soft is key. A camisole and a cute pair of lace sleep shorts are perfect when you don’t want to wear a lot of layers.

And for fall and spring, satin and silk are my go-to’s. Be it shorts and a tank top or a sweet little nightgown, these are perfect transitional fabrics to pair with a comfy robe for chilly mornings.

There you have it! That’s how you get your beauty rest and sleep in style. I’d love to get your thoughts on sleepwear, so use #sleepinginsteil to join the conversation.

If you’re in the market for a new mattress make sure you check out Casper!

Spring Has Sprung

Circle-Skirt Dress - H&M

Circle-Skirt Dress - H&M

Circle-Skirt Dress - H&M

It’s official! Spring has finally found its way to Long Island and I couldn’t be happier. With warmer temperatures in mind, and time to stroll in Georgetown last week, I surveyed a few stores for a new spring look. What I found was a blue and yellow circle-skirt dress in a printed pattern at H&M that was too cute to pass up. The bright color, which didn’t resemble anything in my closet, caught my eye.

This vibrant dress is sure to get a lot of mileage this spring and summer. I’m already putting it to good use today and dressing it up with gold accessories and my Franco Sarto wedges (which are still comfy and have been on major repeat!). Paired with a navy blazer and perhaps a muted pump, it makes a great office ensemble. For a casual feel, wedges or sandals will keep this look comfortable and chic. Either way, this fitted dress with a playful print is a welcome addition to my wardrobe for spring.
