A Tribute to Tim

Tim - Horse

{Tim & Me — March 2009}

Over the summer, I posted about my friend Tim. But he isn’t like most friends. He’s non-verbal, more than 1500 pounds, and will love you to death if you bring treats. Yes, Tim is a horse, and it is with great sadness that I must tell you of his passing. To read the full post about our bond, click here.

I was just finishing up kickboxing class on Saturday when I received a text message from Tim’s owner. The text read, “Tim is down and it looks like today is the day.” Tim had a wonderful life with his long-time owner, Loraine. Seriously, if I come back in another life, I’d like to be one of her horses.

Loraine owned Tim for most of his life. She purchased him when he was a youngster, around 5 years old, and he was in his late thirties at the time of his passing. He was a loyal companion, barn favorite, and easily identifiable with his big brown spots.

Tim - Horse

As I sat at my computer desk last night contemplating a topic for today’s post, I knew I had to honor Tim. He was a huge part of my life growing up and his photos still reside on my nightstand—long after my years as an equestrian.

I am so grateful that I had the privilege of knowing Tim. From riding him bareback on a warm summer day, to taking him down to the field for some grass, life always seemed a little brighter when he was in your presence.

Friday Feelings

It’s the end of yet another week, which is good because I could use a little down down-time. This week Long Island saw record highs in temperature for mid-October. On Wednesday, it was so warm that when I got home from work I went for a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood. It felt strange heading out in a mere short-sleeved shirt, since just days earlier there was a brisk breeze that required a few layers.

Now that the weather has returned to more seasonable temps, I’m looking forward to enjoying the changing colors on the trees, decorating my pumpkins, and stocking up on some Halloween candy (but not too much or too soon, lest I will eat it all before we make it to Halloween!).

Take Me Back to Summer

It’s only a week after the official end of summer and I am already missing it! It seems like there has been no gentle transition to fall temperatures; the weather has changed suddenly – too abruptly for my liking. What happened to sweater weather? I’m about ready to reach for my winter coat in the morning. With any luck, Mother Nature will remember that it’s not supposed to be this cold and give us some warmer weather — after she gets done dousing us with rain for the next several days…at least in these parts. Here’s hoping you all have a great weekend and that the weather is better wherever you are!

Five Things I’m Loving Right Now

Happy Monday, friends! It seems like we were cheers’ing the weekend a mere five minutes ago, doesn’t it? And now, here we are — back to our Monday routines. In the interest of keeping the weekend going a few minutes longer, I’d thought I’d share some things I’m loving at the moment.

OPI Alpine Snow

1. White nail polish: I talked about some of my favorite summer nail polish colors last week, but I finally purchased a white shade from OPI’s line and have been rocking it ever since. While my grandmother may not understand my fondness for the color, Alpine Snow is giving my coral crush a run for its money this season.

Fresh flowers from Trader Joe's

2. Fresh flowers: I always love going to Trader Joe’s and admiring their blooms. They have such pretty flowers. And while I’m not too good about keeping them alive (hence I rarely buy fresh flowers), it’s nice to take in their color and scents while I do my shopping in the store.

Floral sundress from Old Navy

3. Floral sundresses: You may remember this dress from a post I did last year shortly after buying it at Old Navy. Well, this beauty made its official debut at lunch this past Friday. Don’t you just love how well it looks with one of my favorite Snapchat filters?

4. Sangria: Ever since I was in Portugal in 2011, Sangria has been my drink of choice. Nothing is as refreshing in the summer as a nice cold glass of white sangria with lots of fruit!

5. Summer days down at the farm: It has been many years since I’ve called myself an avid equestrian, but lately I’ve been enjoying stopping at the barn and spending an afternoon in the company of equines. This past weekend, after taking my beloved Tim for a walk, I made friends with this guy above who was hoping I had a treat for him!

What are some things you’re loving right now?

Finally Friday

TGIF! From getting a new stove delivered that couldn’t be hooked up properly to learning the fate of my beloved Dowling College, this has been one heck of a week. I know I often talk about catching up on rest and enjoying some relaxation on the weekends, but I could sure use a lot of both over the next 48 hours. Here’s hoping this weekend brings nice weather, pool time, and a calmer mental state.

Highlights from the Hampton Classic

Hampton Classic Horse Show

Can you believe today is the last day of August? It feels like the whole summer flew by, but I was more than happy to spend the final weekend of the month at the Hampton Classic horse show. As is always, the event was fabulous, and the horses, riders, trainers, vendors, and everyone who came out and worked so hard to ensure the show’s success did an incredible job. This year I made it out to the show grounds twice and watched classes in all three rings (grandstand, hunter, and jumper). I couldn’t have asked for better weather and I enjoyed taking lots of photos…over 300 to be exact! Of course, I must thank Hampton Coffee Company for the much needed–and readily available–iced lattes. I will be ordering a supply of their coffee soon.

If you’re wondering about my outfit choices, the decision was difficult. I ended up choosing the white lace dress (what a shock!) and the navy number. The second day I was at the show it was hot and humid, so the white dress was a natural choice. Thank you to everyone who cast their vote and helped me narrow down my options. There is still a mystery dress waiting in the wings, but fear not, it will make an appearance soon.

Here are some of my favorite shots!

Au Revoir August

To honor this being the last full week of August (tear!), I thought I would share some of my snaps from the summer. With any luck, we will be graced with warm days throughout September, but in the meantime I’m not ready to throw in the towel just yet. I’m looking forward to the Hampton Classic horse show this week and another visit to Fire Island. I hope that you enjoy whatever plans you have for this final August week, and don’t forget to tag #livinginsteil on Instagram so I can see how you all are saying au revoir to one of my favorite months!
