How is it the last month of 2022 already? If you’re over there still processing 2020, know I’m with you. For me, the last few months have felt like a whirlwind. From leaving a full-time job and adjusting to working for myself, I thought time would feel like it was moving slower. But it has been the exact opposite. It might be another slow month on the activity front over here at Living in Steil Headquarters, but on the business side I am busier than ever. Plus, not having a lot on the social calendar makes it easier to hibernate until the warmer weather arrives again.
But, if you’re looking for ways to keep busy this holiday season, I’ve got you covered. Here’s what’s on my agenda this month:
Do: While it pains me not to put up a Christmas tree this year, I don’t think I have the energy to lug one home, force it into a base, decorate it, dispose of it, and then spend the next 365 days cleaning up pine needles. But it still marks a yearly tradition in my book that I am sad to see go this year. Instead, I will be purchasing a holiday wreath (which I’ve also done in past years). For those of you looking for a festive activity to do with friends or family, check out some of the upcoming workshops that Hometown Flower has. Their wreath-building and snow globe-making workshops look like so much fun. Plus, you get to take your creation home at the end of the night!
Go: The Shimmering Solstice Holiday Light Show is now open at Old Westbury Gardens until January 1, 2023! If you’re looking for an interactive activity to do outdoors, this is it. I previewed the show before it opened to the public last month, and it was a unique experience. I loved seeing how the grounds at Old Westbury Gardens transformed at night. Check out the recap from my tour for more highlights!
See: Each year, my hometown closes one of the streets to make room for a gigantic Christmas tree that gets lit after Thanksgiving and stays in place until right after New Year’s. It draws crowds from all over Long Island, yet despite being a few blocks from my house, I have never seen it up close. The Huntington Holiday Spectacular becomes a spectacle every night from 5:30 – 11 pm with light shows every 30 minutes. If you’re local, grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants on the street and see the tree!
Try: While I may not be in much of a holiday mood this year, the one thing I would like to do is make my way to an outdoor ice rink. A quick Google search has informed me that there are plenty of locations to do this, from Port Jefferson to Bayville. As a former figure skater, this is one winter activity that is high on my list (and that I will exit hibernation for).
